I work with children (7+), adolescents, and young adults experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, Autism, life transitions, or communication challenges. I have a special interest in supporting young adults navigating independence, careers, and relationships.

For younger clients, I incorporate play and arts and crafts, such as board games, coloring, painting, or kinetic sand, to facilitate sessions. Play is therapeutic and offers opportunities for learning, skill-building, and meeting sensory needs. With adult clients, I help explore the root causes of emotional needs, often reflecting on family of origin and childhood experiences to understand their impact.

My therapeutic approach is tailored to each client, drawing from interpersonal and attachment-based theories. We'll set treatment goals together, integrating techniques like mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) as needed.

Committed to diversity and inclusion, I continuously expand my understanding to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all.

Somer Muhs, MA, LCPC, LMHC

In I earned my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Ball State University in 2018. My training included therapy for children and adults at a university clinic and work with children, adolescents, families, and foster families at a community mental health facility. I also volunteered for the National Suicide Hotline, supported adult female victims of domestic violence, and assisted individuals experiencing poverty.

For over five years after graduation, I worked in a group practice, treating clients aged 6 through adulthood for various challenges. I provided parent management and therapy to children, adolescents, families, and young adults, often collaborating with psychiatrists, psychologists, teachers, and school social workers. I also supervised counseling graduate interns and pre-licensed counselors. I am fully licensed in Illinois and Indiana. In 2024, I launched Somer's Counseling Services, PLLC.

Outside of work, I enjoy tennis, volleyball, hiking, and snowboarding. Indoors, I like to read, craft, and cuddle with my cat, Penny.
