Hello.
My target population includes children ages 7+, adolescents, and young adults who experience anxiety, depression, ADHD, Autism, life transitions, or communication challenges, amongst many other concerns. I have specific interests in working with young adults from college age to young professionals who are taking those next steps into independence, careers, and relationships. With young clients, I often utilize play and/or arts and crafts to facilitate the session. This can include board games, coloring/painting, or using kinetic sand. Play can be very therapeutic for a child and provide many opportunities for learning and skill building during our sessions, as well as meeting their sensory needs. With adult clients, I assist with understanding the root causes of your emotional needs, which sometimes involves reflecting on family of origin experiences and processing your childhood and how that has impacted the adult you are today.
Drawing from interpersonal and attachment-based theories, I tailor my therapy approach to each client. Together, we will set goals for your treatment. I integrate techniques such as mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) as needed. Dedicated to diversity and inclusion, I actively participate in professional development to expand my understanding and create a welcoming and supportive environment for all clients.
Somer Muhs, MA, LCPC, LMHC
In 2018, I received my Master’s of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Ball State University. My clinical training included both a low income university clinic in which I treated children and adults and a community mental health facility where I treated children, adolescents, families, and foster families. I have volunteer experience with the National Suicide Hotline, working with adult female victims of domestic violence, and working with people experiencing poverty.
After graduating, I worked for over five years in a group practicing treating children, adolescents, families, young adults, and providing parent management. During that time, I’ve seen a wide range of clients from age 6 through adulthood with various presenting problems. I frequently collaborated with psychiatrists, psychologists, teachers, school social workers, etc. regarding my clients’ treatment. I’ve also worked as a clinical supervisor, overseeing both counseling graduate interns and pre-licensed counselors. I am fully licensed with both the states of Illinois and Indiana. Somer’s Counseling Services, PLLC was launched in 2024, and I’m excited for this new adventure!
Outside of work, I love to be physically active by playing tennis and volleyball. I also cherish being outside in nature, whether it’s taking a low-key hike or going on an adventurous snowboarding trip. When I’m indoors, I love to read, craft, and snuggle my cat Penny.
